Gravity’s Lament

Gravity’s Lament is a Space Station made of derelict spaceships.

When their communications array is working, you can find Gravity’s Lament on the network.

The history of the station is as transient as its inhabitants.  What is known is at some point, a ship (or ships) that were decommissioned or found derelict but still capable of sustaining life, the inhabitants simply didn’t leave or squatters moved in.  It grew by other ships being added, either previous owners adding their ship, or more abandoned ships being found.

Being a station composed of ships without owners, the station is not owned or controlled by any group.  This leads to an ad hoc form of governance, if it can be called governance at all.

Decisions are made by a form of consensus.  For instance, it was found if that many ships that close together in different orientations all had their gravity fields active, it could wreak havoc.  So they simply do not have gravity fields active, and ask anyone docking to also disable theirs.  This is believed to be an origin of the station’s name, or possibly the regret of not being on a planet and in its gravity well.

If a decision needs to be made or a task needs to be done by an individual, it is often by the “rule of the most annoyed”: the person most annoyed by something is most likely to be the one to actually take it on.  An example of this would be the communication array reactivated by the inhabitant Faehnrich.  This often leads to that individual being de facto responsible for what they took on.  Which explains why tasks are done by the most annoyed, it must be enough to claim that responsibility.  The exceptions to this are the sanitation facilities, which are immaculate.  It can only be speculated what led to this.

Addresses and routing within the station is a complex system, with parts of the station being added on and built without any plan, or existing parts of the station being moved elsewhere at a later time.  Shared mapping software is used to navigate the station and mostly works.

The station uses the usual time standard.  Everyone simply ignores it.

While the station is mapped and navigable easily enough, the anomalous section of the station is usually avoided, intentionally or not.  It is believed to be a ship that has passed through another dimension.  This cannot be confirmed because it normally can not be perceived/comprehended/remembered.
